Fun in the sun

When looking for family camping tents, there are several things that you need to consider. You don’t want to wait till you are at your camping destination to find out that the tent you have chosen will not meet the needs of you and your family.

Determining the Size of Your Tent

One of the first things you need to decide is how big of a tent you and your family will need. You will be using your tent for more than just sleeping in. You will need enough room for not only your bedding but your clothing and personal items as well.

You will be using your tent for getting dressed in the morning or changing your clothes throughout the day. Your tent may also provide a place for the kids to play if the weather turns bad and it starts to rain.

Choosing the Style of Family Camping Tents

There are many styles of camping tents on the market, and you need to determine which style will be best for your family’s needs.

Cabin Tent

The cabin tent is one of the more modern tents on the market and is the type of tent that you will see the most in campgrounds and other camping destinations. It is rectangular in shape and depending on the size of the tent can sleep up to 10 people. The cabin tent is also one of the easier tents to set up.

Dome Tent

The dome tent is also famous in family camping tents and is usually used for smaller families of around 3 or 4. The dome tent gets its name from the dome shape it has and comes in sizes that will sleep anywhere from 2 – 8 people.

One of the benefits of a dome tent is that they

Discount camping gear at affordable prices

Discount camping gear at affordable prices

Finding good quality discount camping gear on the internet can be a frustrating challenge. Most of what you get returned in the search engine results is online stores trying to sell camping gear at prices that are anything but a discount.

While sacrificing quality to be able to pay a few dollars less for camping gear is not recommended, it is possible to find good quality discount camping gear at great prices.

There are however a few items of camping gear that are very important in ensuring that you experience the best camping trip possible and these should always be of the best quality.

Here are the few items that you should never sacrifice quality for the price.

Your tent is your single source of protection from the elements and needs to be strong and durable for many years of use.

A good quality sleeping bag will always keep you warm and as my Mom always liked to say, as snug as a bug in a rug.

I had always bought a cheaper air mattress in hopes of saving a little money and soon found out that I had to buy a new mattress every two or three camping trips. Plus a good quality air mattress gives you a much better night’s sleep.

Here are some of the places that I have found where you can get good quality discount camping gear.

Wal-Mart has a very good selection of quality camping gear at very good prices and is one of the best places where you can find discount camping gear.

They have a lot of name brand products at prices far lower then you can find in any of the other stores. If dealing with the big crowds that are always present at most Wal-Mart stores isn’t your cup of

Use the RV blue book

Use the RV blue book

One of the best ways to find out what the value of a used RV is with the RV blue book. The blue book is a term people use when talking about the value of a car or recreational vehicle.

You can find the blue book listings of many different makes and models of recreational vehicles. It is basically a appraisal listing of different vehicles that is based on the miles of the vehicle, the condition of the vehicle and the different options a RV may have.

There are two different kinks of the Kelley blue book. The first one is a guide that gives you a list of truck campers, van conversions and motor homes and there price or value. The second rv blue book provides you with a list of tent trailers, travel trailers, fifth wheel trailers and park model trailers.

The consumer edition of the blue book is the one that most people are familiar with. The consumer edition can be picked up from bookstores all over the country.

The newer book gives you information for the latest models of RV’s. It also gives you the suggested retail price of the manufacture as well as the cost to the dealers and any extra costs that could be included such as shipping.

The RV blue book will give you information on RV’s going back 10 – 15 years. If you’re selling your RV, you can find out what you could sell it for if you were selling it to another person and what you could expect to receive if you were going to use it as a trade-in.

You will also be able to use a chart or check off list so you can add information such as the condition of the vehicle, miles on the vehicle

Choosing the right camping gear

Choosing the right camping gear

There are so many things that go on a great camping trip and having the right camping gear is a big part of it. Going down to your local K-mart or Wall-mart store and quickly grabbing some items off of the shelf may be okay, but it is important that you choose the right gear that will best fit your needs and last through many camping trips to come.

Getting set up with all the right camping gear can be quite expensive, and while it ‘s nice to try and save money on buying cheap equipment, some items should always be of high quality to make sure your camping trip is always an enjoyable one.

Here are some of the more important things to have on your list of camping gear.

Tent

Your tent is one of the more important things that you need to make sure that is of high quality as it will be what protects you from the wind and rain and other elements during the day and while you are sleeping. Although we do most of our camping in an RV nowadays, we always carry two good quality tents for the kids and grandkids to use.

While it isn’t necessary to buy a high-quality tent such as the Alaskan Guide Model shown here from Cabela’s, you can pick up an excellent quality tent for around $100 depending on the size of canvas that you want.

Sleeping Bag

Here is another item on your list of camping gear that should be of high quality. When choosing a sleeping bag, you first need to determine what type of camping you will be doing. Will you be doing most of your camping in warm weather, or will you be camping in an area where the temperatures could drop into

Camping sporting goods

Camping sporting goods

Whether or not you are new to camping, there are some important camping sporting goods that you need to make sure to bring along on your next camping trip. While some of these are not as important as others, they will all make sure that you have an enjoyable camping experience.

Your Camping Tent:

Your tent not only needs to be of good quality, but it should be large enough to fit everyone comfortably and still have room for some of your gear. A good rule of thumb is to get a tent that sleeps two more people then you have in your camping party.

This not only will allow you enough room to move around it will also allow you to keep some personal things in the tent, so you do not have to run back and forth to the car all the time.

A Good Sleeping Bag: (or two)

It is always a good idea to have a good quality sleeping bag. Of all the camping sporting goods this one could be the difference of having a good nights sleep, or tossing and turning all night. The reason I say (or two), is because some nights can get very cold and if you don’t have a good warm sleeping bag, you could be in for a rough night.

On the other hand, some areas of the country stay very warm at night, and you will want a lighter sleeping bag for these nights. That’s why I always carry along a warm weather and a cold weather sleeping bag on all of my camping trips.

An alternative to this would be to have a warm weather sleeping bag and bring along some warm blankets just incase it gets cold. You also could use the blankets under your sleeping

Several Tarps

Several Tarps

Of all the camping sporting goods on your list, this one has to be one of the top items on your list. Too many times I see people out camping without any tarps and many times they will give up after the first night and head home.

Even if it doesn’t rain, the moisture and cold from the ground will seep up through the bottom of your tent and get everything wet. Even the moisture in the air at night can make your tent wet enough to create condensation in your tent and make your gear damp or even wet.

That is why it is very important to place a tarp both under your tent and above your tent, even if there is no rain in sight. I always bring a few extra tarps to use throughout the camp site just in case.

Cooking Gear And Utensils:

Now this is going to depend on what you bring along to eat but you want to make sure that you bring along the proper gear to not only cook the food that you bring along, but also the proper gear to serve and eat the food as well.

I won’t go into everything you would need here as I have put together a very good Camping Checklist that you can use as a guide.

Some Good Camping Games:

The camping games that you bring along on your camping trip will depend on weather you have a group of all adults, or you have both adults and kids in your camping. Camping games are a very important part of your camping sporting goods as these can take a good camping trip and turn it into a great camping trip.

Again, I won’t go into all of the camping games you can take along

Supplies

Supplies

Camping supplies could cover a vast amount of things, such as an ax, wood, food, tents, sleeping bags and even a cook stove. Here we will cover such items as fire wood, an ax, food and other supplies you would stock up on when going camping. Other items such as tents, sleeping bags and cook stoves will be covered under Camping Gear.

Let’s take a look at some of the more important camping supplies that you will want to make sure you bring along on all of your camping trips.

Can Opener

You may laugh at this one, but the can opener is one of the most forgotten items when going camping. I have found myself more then once trying to open a can with a knife which is not the safest thing to do. In my early days of camping, I even used a rock once to open a can of soup. So make sure that you have a can opener on your list of camping supplies.

Fire Wood

There is something about sitting around a camp fire in the evening or early morning that makes a camping trip more special. The kids just love to make s’mores when we go camping and I always place the coffee pot next to the fire to keep it nice and warm in the morning. Be sure to check the fire regulations in the area that you will be camping as some areas don’t allow open fires during certain times of the year.

Ax or Hatchet

These always come in handy to chop up bigger pieces of fire wood and cutting wood into smaller pieces to be used as kindling. I have even used my ax to cut a tent pole or two when one or more of the tent poles were

Choosing the best camping cots

Choosing the best camping cots

There are a lot of different kinds of camping cots on the market today and choosing the right one is very important. Here are a few important points that you need to consider before purchasing a cot.

Choosing a cot that is poorly made and uncomfortable can cause you to have many sleepless nights. You want to make sure that the cot you buy will last for many great camping trips. If your cot is poorly made you will find yourself replacing it every few years.

Is the cot easy to put together?

There are a few camping cots on the market today that is very difficult to assemble.

One of the first camping cots that I had was made of a piece cloth, two poles and some wires that held the cot just a few inches off the ground. This cot was very uncomfortable and allowed the cold from the ground to seep up through my sleeping bag.

Needless to say, that was the last time that I ever used that cot.

Some of the best cots on the market today are the Army-style cots. They are made of both wood and square aluminum tubing. They are comfortable, well made and are easy to put up and take down.

The cots that are made of wood are well made but are better suited for kids due to their light weight. Over time these cots can wear a little and become wobbly from the heaver weight of an adult. The camping cots that are made form square tubing are the best cots available and will last through many great camping trips. They are very strong and durable and are better suited for adults.

Some of the camping stores will even have three or four 300 pound guys standing on the cots

Roscommon Michigan

Roscommon Michigan

My favorite campground is South Higgins Lake State Park campground. This is one of two campgrounds around this lake, but I think this one is much nicer and more developed and modernized, which is what my family prefers when camping.

It is filled with fun activities to do with friends and family. There is a beautiful, fairly good sized lake to swim, boat, water-ski, jet-ski, fish, and relax by.

There are also many trails for biking or hiking around the lake, some of which I hear go all the way around the huge lake. And there are some playgrounds for the little ones to swing or slide too.

There are also campsites with electrical hookups. Campsites also include fire pits and a picnic table. The bathrooms are clean and very nice, and the campground as a whole is kept very tidy and beautiful year-round.

I enjoy the water and the landscape a lot and there are planned nature walks with the park rangers at certain times during the week which are informational and full of different types of wildlife.

There is a little shop where you can rent boats and they have a bit of supplies, and also candy. There is also a cute little town area very close by where you can grab a bite to eat, or bait and fishing supplies or a nice ice cream treat.

I go here once a year with my parents and sisters, and we meet up with a bunch of aunts and uncles and cousins for about a week of camping.

It is a very fun and relaxing time, there is much to do and if you don’t want to do anything there are many places to enjoy relaxing and laying around.

Best Campgrounds In Missouri

Best Campgrounds In Missouri

Huzzah Valley is a great campground, my family and I love it because it easily located from where we live, has great RV parks, and one time we got to the camp site and realized that we had forgotten our sons sleeping bag.

We were reluctant to find that we were able to buy one at the camp store and our son was not forced to sleep inside the RV. The campground has a rope swing that the kids would go swing off of with the other kids for hours.

Every time we go, as a tradition we have to kayak down the huzzah river, it’s about an hour and a half long kayak if you don’t stop for ‘drinks’.

One of the very few downsides of Huzzah Valley is that for the younger ones, the rope swing is about the only thing for them to do, so if your children bored easily, they wont find much to do, but I can’t recall ever camping that the children didn’t get bored at so it really isn’t that big of a let down.

Be warned if you go into the campground store, the store can be very pleasant looking to a six year old, my six year old son (at the time on the incident) cried for what felt like three hours because we couldn’t afford to buy one of the more expensive house decorations for the store because we had forgotten a sleeping bag and were forced to pay a fair amount.
